What if there was a tool you could use to decrease stress, help with physical pain, stop food cravings and change limiting beliefs? The Emotional Freedom Technique, known as EFT or Tapping, can do this and so much more.

EFT expert and co-author of the bestselling book “Freedom at Your Fingertips,” Brad Yates, joined Elevated Existence Magazine founder, Tamy Masetroberte, as part of the Living an Elevated Existence Mind, Body & Soul Summit to talk about the topic, and even walked listeners through a 10-minute tapping exercise.

“EFT is based on acupuncture and Chinese medicine, which has been around for thousands of years,” Yates said on the call. “In Chinese medicine, they say there is a flow of energy through these pathways in the body call meridians, and when this energy is flowing naturally we experience this natural state of wellbeing in body and mind. When this energy gets stuck somehow, then we don’t feel so good.”

By tapping on the eight key points given by EFT, we are balancing out the energy and getting it flowing again so we feel good and can clear out disruptions such as sadness, anxiety, anger and pain. Research has also been done showing the tapping process dramatically reduces stress. Particularly cortisol levels are reduced, which is one of the stress hormones, said Yates.

EFT & Emotions

Using EFT to bring down stress, fear and anxiety can offer immediate relief, and by getting our emotions under control, we can make better choices in our lives, said Yates. Most choices are made at the emotional level, and when they are not being made consciously, they are unconscious and based on our emotions.

“If we have uncomfortable emotions going on, and fears like, ‘I’m afraid to have more money then my friends,’ or ‘I’m afraid if I lose weight I might be more attractive, and I’ll have to get into a relationship, and relationships are painful.’ All of this stuff goes on at an unconscious level,” Yates said. “All we know is ‘hmmm, I wanted something to eat, and I was going to have a carrot and instead I ate a box of cookies.’ We make all those choices at an emotional level, and if we can use the tapping to clear out those uncomfortable emotions that so often drive unhealthy choices and unhealthy behavior, we can live a more elevated life.”

Each of the points we tap on with EFT is actually an endpoint along different meridians in the body, and each corresponds to a different organ in the body. These organs are also associated with different emotions, Yates said.

“The great thing about tapping is we are focusing on so many different emotions and so many different points, that we don’t have to narrow in because everything is so inter-related,” he noted. “When we are tapping all the different points we are covering our bases.”

Our emotions are designed to protect us and let us know when something is going on that needs our attention – similar to a smoke detector in our home, according to Yates. Anger is like having a smoke detector. It let’s us know something is going on that we need to look into. However, many people will sit and complain that smoke alarm is going off, and wont get up to turn it off or see if there is a fire, he noted.

“It’s not a matter of, ‘quick lets tap and make sure we get rid of that bad feeling.’ It’s a matter of ‘I’m going to process this and find out.’ So when the smoke detector goes off, is it a battery that needs to be changed, or is there really a fire that needs to be put out,” he said on the call.

The tapping process is a way of getting through our emotions to see what is really going on underneath. If we are feeling sad, or reaching for the cookies, tapping can help us find out why. Maybe we are really upset about an argument with a friend that brought up an issue from the past.

“With the nervous system, when we perceive a threat, our brain function goes to the midbrain and into fight or flight. Then when we realize the danger has passed, the parasympathetic nervous system kicks in and our thinking returns to the frontal brain where we have creative thinking, are open minded and can think more clearly,” Yates explained. “The tapping helps to move us back into that. It moves us back into the parasympathetic nervous system and helps us make better choices, and do better things and live a better life.”

Pain & Food Cravings

One of the fastest ways to see how EFT works is to use it on pain – whether its someone dealing with fibromyalgia, back pain or a migraine. Often tapping on pain will also help our stress level, and vice versa, because the two are usually tied together.

“So much of the pain we experience has stress in it. I’ve heard people say 75 percent to 90 percent of physical pain is emotional. As we clear that out, we are clearing out the uncomfortable feelings that we have about it,” Yates said. “It’s not just the physical pain going on, but also all this physical disruption in our mind. As we clear the stress, our body naturally heals itself. So we start healing more quickly.”

It’s not abnormal for someone to tap on a physical pain, and then discover as the pain clears, so does anger about an argument with a friend, he noted. The same is true for someone who may be tapping on sadness, and then find relief from a physical pain.

Another way EFT can help is to release a person from cravings including sugar and chocolate. Yates shared a story of attending an EFT conference with founder of the technique, Gary Craig, who passed out Hershey Kisses, and asked how badly on a scale of 1 to 10 people wanted to eat it. Then led them through a round of tapping.

“I was a chocoholic at the time, so I said, about an 8,” he shared. “We tapped for a few minutes, and I had about as much interest in the chocolate as I did the foil wrapper. And I don’t think I even touched chocolate for about 2 years.”

The same tapping structure is used not matter what the issue is, and if we are in public, can even work if we are only tapping on one point. The wording we use helps to bring up the issues that may be lurking in our unconscious mind that may have an emotional charge to it.

We can even use tapping to raise our vibration and attract more good into our lives because when we feel better, we create better things for ourselves.

“If you think of a hot air balloon, it’s untethered. It just rises. An elevated life is our default position. It’s our natural state. We don’t’ have to push ourselves up into an elevated life. That is our natural tendency. It’s these ropes that tie us down – these uncomfortable feelings and old limiting beliefs that hold us back. So as we release and untie these ropes we naturally rise to a more elevate life,” Yates said.

Overcoming a Child’s Dental Fears – by Kim Cook

A young girl (9 years old) was going to the dentist to have four teeth extracted so that orthodontic work could be done. She would have two extracted at the first appointment and then the following week she would go back to have the other two removed. I offered EFT to her since we have tapped together many times before and had great results. I asked her what she was thinking about in regards to getting her teeth pulled out. She was scared about the pain that she might feel when the dentist was pulling them out. She has never had teeth pulled out before however she has had teeth naturally fall out when they were ready. She didn’t have an exact reason why she was scared i.e., she hasn’t had siblings or friends go through it, but none the less she was scared about the pain. SUD’s level doesn’t seem to resonate with her so I asked her to show me with her arms how scared she was.

Not scared at all: arms extending in front of her body with hands and arms touching.

Very scared: arms stretched out on either side of her body.

From the distance her arms were apart I rated it in my own head a SUD’s of 7. I then asked her how she knew she was this scared about the pain and she said, “My stomach is really turning.” I asked, “How bad is it?” She rated it a 9 with her arms. We began tapping.

Even though I am scared of the pain I might feel I am a great kid.

Even though my stomach is really turning I am a great kid.

Even though I am really scared to do this I am a great kid.

EB: scared of the pain

SE: my stomach is turning

UE: really scared to do this

We took a deep breath and had a drink of water.

I had her again rate how scared she was that she might feel pain. Her SUD’s (using her arms) went down to approximately 2. SUD’s for stomach turning went down to a 3.

Slight Reframe in the Set-Up

Even though I am still scared that I might feel pain since I haven’t ever done this before maybe I’ll be ok.

Even though I am still scared to get my teeth pulled and my stomach is still turning maybe I will be okay.

Even though I am still a little scared because I don’t know what to expect maybe I will get through this okay, I am a strong kid.

EB: still scared

SE: stomach still turning

UE: maybe I will be okay

UN: maybe this will not be so bad

She said, “Well I am not really scared of the pain, it’s the blood in my mouth that I don’t want to taste; that would be gross.” (New aspect had surfaced)

SUD’s Level 5 on this statement. I ask her, “Do you feel this anywhere in your body?” She says, “My mouth is really dry.” SUD’s level for mouth: 6

Even though I don’t want to taste blood in my mouth because that is gross I am a good kid.

Even though I may taste blood and I don’t want to, I think I am going to be okay.

Even though right now my mouth is dry thinking about the blood I am a good kid.

EB: don’t want to taste blood

SE: it’s gross tasting

UE: don’t like the taste of blood in my mouth

UN: my mouth is dry

CH: blood is so gross tasting

KB: thinking about it makes my mouth dry

She had a big yawn. Nice release.

Reframe: (she was getting bored with this tapping round)

SE: I’ve tasted it before when I lost my tooth when I was younger

UN: I don’t like it, but I have had teeth fall out and the blood was no big deal

KB: it’s just a little blood and I can just spit it out

She looked completely bored with the tapping. I asked, “How do you feel now about tasting blood in your mouth?” Her response was, “I don’t know. I don’t want to taste it because it tastes gross, but I know that I can just spit it out in that little cup.” (Cognitive shift) Her mouth was no longer as dry as it was. I asked her to close her eyes and picture herself sitting in the dentist’s chair and she had just had the first tooth pulled. She told me that she could see herself spitting out the blood into the cup and she didn’t like that taste of it, but it didn’t bother her. However (new aspect) she could smell the dental office and she hates that smell.

SUD’s level for the smell of the dental office was a 4; she didn’t seem to have any sensations in her body in relation to this.

Even though I hate the smell of the dentist’s office I am a good kid.

Even though I can smell that smell as soon as I walk in and I don’t like it I am a good kid.

Even though I hate that smell I am going to be okay.

EB: I hate that smell

SE: what is that smell

UE: the smell of the dentist’s office makes me not want to go in there

UN: that smell

CH: I hate it

UA: I don’t like that smell when I am in there

I was losing her again with boredom.

Reframe:

SUD’s level on smell down from a 4 to a 0.

At this point I asked her if she had any other things about her dental appointment that she wanted to work on. “No” she said, “I just want to go play for a few minutes before we have to leave.”

The appointment went very well. During the entire appointment, while she was being worked on, I just simply tapped on all of her fingertip points so that if she was going through anything hopefully we were taking care of it right there in the moment. She had two teeth extracted and although there was some blood the dentist actually said that there wasn’t as much as he expected. We came home that evening and her mouth had been packed with gauze to absorb anymore blood. The dentist called a couple hours later to check in with us. He asked how many times I had to change the gauze and I said, “None, she took the gauze out of her mouth on the drive home and there has been no bleeding except for what was on the original gauze.” The dentist seemed very surprised at this and told her that, “She was doing very well.” She ate dinner that night and went to school the next day as though she hadn’t even gone through the procedure. For the next couple of days I continued to check in with her regarding pain, blood or any other discomfort. The only thing that bothered her was when food got into the holes of her gums, but other than that she said that she was fine.

One Week Later

The night before her appointment I asked if there was anything that she wanted to tap on. Her answer was, “No, it wasn’t really that bad last week. I know I will be okay tomorrow.” What a great thing to hear, nice cognitive shift. The next day in the car ride to the dentist (45 minutes) she became very quiet, which isn’t typical, so I asked her if she was okay. She said she was fine but I could hear in her voice it wasn’t exactly true. A few minutes passed and I decided to turn my rear view mirror down to face her. I could see her tapping away. I did not interrupt her because I knew she was giving herself a fabulous gift by helping herself through whatever emotions, feelings or thoughts she was facing. She tapped for about 7 minutes. She had been so focused on tapping that she never even saw me in the mirror until after she was done. I asked her if she felt comfortable telling me what she had just tapped on. I was surprised to hear what it was. She said that the only thing that had bothered her last week at the dentist was that her jaw had hurt quite-a-bit because she had to keep her mouth open for so long. She said that her jaw hurt toward the end of the appointment and it still had bothered her some the next day. She blamed that not only on her mouth having to stay open but also on the dentists “fat fingers”. I had to chuckle at this, but she said she was actually tapping on “his fat fingers in my mouth.”

Her second appointment went just as well as the first and although there didn’t seem to be any other aspects I continued to tap on her fingertip points during the entire appointment. The appointment was quicker than the first, bleeding was minimal during and after, she experienced no pain just slight tugging during the extractions and the best thing for her was that her jaw didn’t hurt nearly as much as it had the week before. She explained her jaw as being “More tired than painful” this time. After we returned home I offered her EFT for her “tired jaw” but she said that she would tap for herself if she thought that she needed it. She is a very independent 9 year old and since she had done such a great job in the car I decided to completely trust her and allow her to tap if or when she needed to. I watched her at dinner time for any signs of distress, but saw none. As she climbed into bed that evening I asked her how she was doing and she said, “I feel good and my jaw isn’t even tired.” I gave her great praise for helping herself with this wonderful tool that she has learned. As far as I am concerned EFT completely transformed this potentially unpleasant experience into a completely tolerable situation. And the best part for me as a parent is in knowing that my daughter now has the ability to help herself in any situation that comes her way. And she has pride in knowing that she is able to help herself. Even though I have used EFT for years it amazes me each time I see the results. This child is 9 years old and now she has a tool that she can use for life. What an incredible gift.

Self-Evaluation

Childs’ Dental Fears
1.How rapport was established at the begging of the session, and what you did to make the client comfortable in the clinical setting. I didn’t have this child in my office. We were actually sitting on her bed which made her feel more comfortable and at ease. I made good eye contact with her and after she spoke I always repeated what she said to make sure I had it right and that I was using her words in the EFT rounds.
2.How did you explain to the client what to expect? Client already has used EFT many times in the past for falls, fear of bees, friend issues etc. She likes using EFT, but only on her terms, so I never push her into tapping. I usually ask if I can help and then I allow her to come to me when and if she is ready.
3.Was there a discussion of confidentiality, and/or signing of Informed Consent? This client knows that anything that we talk about is strictly between her and me. I do not talk to anyone about our sessions unless she has brought it up and given me permission. She feels very comfortable in confiding in me about her issues and concerns.
4.How did you demonstrate presence with the client? I listen very well and always try to repeat back to my client what I have heard. I want to make sure that I use their words and that I am hearing and interpreting correctly exactly what they have said. I also use good eye contact when appropriate. (Some clients are uncomfortable with strong eye contact.) I usually work with this client in a very comfortable, casual setting such as, outside on the grass, sitting on her bed or the couch. This allows her and I to be more relaxed and playful with EFT, instead of official (which would completely block her from sharing).
5.If a new technique was introduced, did you explain what would happen? We usually tap only on the shortcut points; however she does know the entire EFT long version. I did get her permission to tap on her fingertip points while she was having her dental procedure done. I told her that if at any time she wanted me to stop tapping she could just gently pull her hand away (she never did).
6.Was there a core issue underneath the presenting issue, and, if so, how was that discovered and handled? I asked her in the very beginning of the session why she felt she had the fear. We determined that no one she knew had experienced this before, so she wasn’t hooked into their trauma or belief. We couldn’t establish any past core issues.

Closure: I let her know that anytime she had something come up that she wanted to tap on I was there for her. I also watched her closely for any signs of distress and discomfort. Since she doesn’t always come to me I made sure that I checked in with her often to see if there were any other aspects, new fears etc…that needed to be worked with.

EFT & Headaches – gone!

Sometimes when I am doing out-of-office work, I will get what seems to be a sinus related headache.  Since I am a Certified EFT Practitioner, it dawned on me one day to take a few moments and tap about the headache.  I would do a few rounds of tapping, then go about my work.  Usually I would think that I wasn’t getting any results, (because the symptoms would still be there) then just forget about it.  Then I discovered what was really happening, a delayed reaction.  Now I know that when I am going to tap about a personal headache, I will see the successful results in 5 to 15 minutes.  The headache will just be gone.  I have to remember to check in with myself, and sure enough, its gone.  Interesting how EFT can keep getting the desired results (no more headache), but we may have to wait for just a little bit for it to show up.

EFT Improves Confidence! (Both physical and emotional)

Great News from Dawson Church –

Research Shows EFT Improves Confidence: A study recently published in a large peer-reviewed sports journal showed that EFT improves confidence levels in athletes. Researcher Darlene Downs gathered data from 10 female volleyball players at a university, and I wrote up the results for publication. We analyzed their levels of PTSD, as it manifested both physically and emotionally. We also measured their confidence levels, and their degree of trauma around a single adverse event. They then received a single EFT session that lasted only 20 minutes. Afterwards, their confidence levels improved, while both physical and emotional aspects of PTSD decreased. When followed up 60 days later, their improvements had held. The improvements in mental health had high statistical significance, meaning that there was only 1 possibility in 1,000 that the results were due to chance. This study confirms the results of two earlier randomized controlled trials of EFT for athletic performance, and contributes to the growing body of research demonstrating EFTs effectiveness for a wide range of psychological and physical problems.

Dealing with Body Pain

It can be surprising for clients to learn that pain in their body can be significantly improved or even eliminated by using EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), or tapping as some call it.

EFT is a process of working with the body’s own energy systems to help correct “stuck” energy, i.e. like when we have been in a car accident, then are totally afraid to drive again.  EFT can clear that out.  It can also deal with specific body issues and the pains that show up.

I worked again with a client today that has had long term, on and off, pain in her upper body.  After the major emotional and physical challenges were addressed via EFT for the right side of her body, which was why she was coming to me, then the pain shifted and was manifesting differently (and with less intensity) on the left side.

Her insight was that this was “left over” issues from the past that keep showing up.  Obviously why there was now a challenge in the left side of her body.

After many rounds of tapping on both the physical and emotional aspects of the problem, she looked right at me and said “its gone!”.  She then proceeded to move her arms and shoulders, and feel her upper back, and assured me that the pain was gone.

Its always interesting to see the connection between our mind and body, and how they interact over an entire lifetime of experiences, traumas, situations, and relationships.

Since I am not in the medical profession, (and don’t even play one on TV), I always leave the analysis of what has happened to the client.  They know their bodies better than anyone else.

The founder of EFT, Gary Craig, said to “try it on everything!  Many people that use energy psychology, EFT being one form of it, are expanding the horizons of healing in all areas of our lives, be it emotional, physical, or performance.

Just try it on everything!

Building Community – For Business – A Fun Combination

I’ve been involved in business networking for several decades now.

That’s what business people do to help keep their funnel of prospects coming in the right direction for new clients and business.

The interesting part of it that often goes unnoticed is the really getting to know people on a more personal basis as a result of the networking.  Building community, and bonds of trust and friendship.

A great example of that for me was attending an evening event where a group of women all came together to do similar paintings to take home.  Much food, beverages, and fun was had by all.  We laughed, shared, did some bonding, and had a great time.

Someone in the group said we all needed to just start “tapping” the paint onto the canvases.  Then everyone was saying it.  It took me longer than most to make the connection that I was the only one in the “tapping” (Emotional Freedom Techniques, EFT) business.  What a hoot.  I hear that word so often that its just a part of who I am now and a word I use many many times a day.  We all had a good laugh over that one.

Will I be doing more business with many of these ladies?  You bet!  That’s the plus side for business of just having fun with new or almost new friends.  Business happens.

Don’t overlook the benefits of spending this extra time and commitment to help your business grow.  You just may have a whole lot of fun along the way!

Tax Time Already? Anxious?

 

 

You can use EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) to tap away tax anxiety!

Believe it or not I’m really ok paying taxes. The 15th of April is a day that a lot of people get very fearful and anxious about.  I have been able to work through that.  Mind you this wasn’t always the case. Like many other people who are self-employed I had fears around handling the burden of paying estimated quarterly taxes, filing my business reports, and keeping really good track of all my receipts.

 

 

Use this list as tapping prompts for your own inner
work and set yourself free from this annual stressor once and for all.

1. Tap on feeling overwhelmed by the process. Sit down at your desk, pull out those  files, and see what shows up in your body.

2. Tap on the fear of getting it wrong. Do you think you will make a big costly mistake or that you will miss a big tax break? Do you feel you can’t do it yourself, have you always taking your pile of paperwork to someone else to deal with?
This includes fear of hiring the wrong person to help you!

3. Tap on the fear of getting audited. The fact is that only less than 1% of filers actually get audited. Clear this though because remember that this energy can attract this experience to you.

4. Tap on the fear of doing the math. Did you know that fear of math activates pain centers in the brain? If you have a history of math anxiety you might want to tap on those past events as well.

5. Tap on procrastination.  Procrastination is ALWAYS Fear. Figure out what that fear is and tap on it being as specific as you can be.

6. Tap on negative past events related to taxes. This was one of the keys for me.  Decades ago I was audited several years in a row!  Come to find out it was because the tax prep person was shady, and the feds were auditing every one of their clients!  Needless to say, I hired a new tax preparation person the next year.

Obstacles? What obstacles?

 

Obstacles are in your mind.
What?
Really. What’s the difference between an obstacle and a situation?

Your reaction.  It’s amazing how much energy we can put into creating an obstacle out of a situation.
If you drop your reaction your obstacle becomes just a situation.
Blocks from past experience may just disappear, leaving your way open.
You feel lighter, freed up. You may even be enthusiastic about whatever it is.
That’s what people found when I did this in a group setting.

One man said “Knot I’ve had in my neck has totally vanished!  Its been there for as long as I can remember.”
Another, when asked how strong his reaction was to his obstacle after doing some work said “It’s totally neutralized.  I can’t find it at all!.”

Imagine saying that about (or to) your obstacles. You may find yourself doing just that during a private session using EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques).

Pick something that seems to be blocking your way forward in your life. Bring that and let’s see what happens.

Oh, and nobody needs to know what your obstacle is unless you decide to share it.  Issues can be worked on without revealing any of the details of the situation or distress.
